When budgeting for a wedding dress, it's important to factor in the cost of alterations. While sales consultants may give an estimate, it's not exact. As a bridal seamstress, I don't have a standard price list, as each dress requires a unique amount of work. The cost depends on the amount of work required and the time it takes to complete it. For instance, a lace or horsehair hem is more time-consuming than a plain hem, so it costs more. My rate is $58 an hour; on average, a dress takes about 10 hours. This would include services such as taking in the sides and bust, tightening straps, cups, hem, and bustle. Steaming your gown after alterations are complete is also part of my service. After the first fitting, I can provide an estimated cost range. At the first fitting, $100 is due, which will be deducted from the final cost. If scheduling a consultation, a fee of $30 is due, which will be deducted from the final alteration cost if you wish to proceed.
